LONDON FASHION WEEK MEN’S 2020

The rising profile of men’s fashion has placed a spotlight on LFWM like never before. So when the 3 day spectacle hits the Truman Brewery expect fanfare. Highlights include the return of WALES BONNER, alongside Martine Rose, Bethany Williams, Charles Jeffrey and ART SCHOOL. 4-6 January.

IVY PARK X ADIDAS

For the relaunch of her athleisure brand Ivy Park, Bey has put inclusivity at the top of the agenda (naturally). The entire Spring ‘20 capsule collection is gender neutral, offering functional performance gear and new footwear styles for everybody. Vivid cranberry and solar orange colours bring instant impact to the utilitarian jumpsuits and cargo pants. 18 January.

RIXO RETREAT

The RIXO community heads IRL. Known for its eclectic prints and ageless silhouettes, the London-based fashion brand will launch its debut event series focusing on female-led wellness masterclasses. Think astrology, sound bath meditation, and that all elusive quest to hashtag get the glow. All proceeds go to mental health service Shout UK – the first 24/7 text service for anyone in crisis. 94 Kings Road pop up store. 13 – 17 January.

COPENHAGEN FASHION WEEK

The great Danes—aka Ganni, Saks Potts, Holzweiler, Cecilie Bahnsen and Stine Goya—flock to Copenhagen for the unveiling of their AW20 collections. The rise of Scandi chic was arguably the defining aesthetic of the last decade, excited to see what they do next… 28 – 31 January.

AMPELI

Taking cues from the modern wine-focused restaurants of Athens, Ampéli will feature dishes inspired by the Eastern Mediterranean. Head for Ampéli’s braised short ribs with date molasses and dried Moroccan peppers—reason enough to visit. 15 January. 18 Charlotte Street, London W1T 2LZ

MUSE

 Britain’s youngest ever two Michelin star chef, Tom Aikens, is making his fine dining return with an intimate 25-seater restaurant in Belgravia. Described as a “gastronomic autobiography”, the tasting menu comprises of dishes inspired by people, experiences and events in Aikens’s life. Perhaps frustratingly for some, the menu contains no ingredients, but simply details the inspirations and emotions in the dish. An exercise in trust. 15 January. 38 Groom Place, Belgravia.

OBSESSION FOOD FESTIVAL

24 Master Chefs, with 21 Michelin Stars between them will perform their craft and create masterpieces before your very eyes. A foodie haven based in the luxury hotel, Northcote— this is one of the most prestigious gourmet festivals in the world. Angela Hartnett, Richard Corrigan, Ken Hom et al return to celebrate the festival’s 20th anniversary. 24 January - 9 February. Northcote Road, Langho, Blackburn, Lancashire BB6 8BE

EAT GREEN BY MELISSA HEMSLEY

A must buy for the Veganuary brigade. 100 feel-good recipes that use entirely UK-grown ingredients— alongside savvy waste-cutting advice and how to zhuzh up your scraggy veg leftovers. 7 January.

SUCH A FUN AGE BY KILEY REID

Pipped as 2020’s Sally Rooney— Kiley Reid’s debut novel is a millennial take on the 19th-century novel of manners, investigating race, friendship and privilege. It follows a young black babysitter called Emira, her well-intentioned employer, and a surprising connection that threatens to undo them both. The piercing social commentary and illuminating examination of Emira’s inner life give the novel a whiff of the bildungsroman. 7 January.

EXHIBITIONS

PICASSO & PAPER

Picasso didn’t just draw on paper – he tore it, burnt it, and made it three-dimensional. The wacky chap that is Pablo. From studies for ‘Guernica’ to impressive mural size collages, this exhibition at The Royal Academy of Art brings together more than 300 works on paper spanning his 80-year career. 25 January.

FILM & TV

SEBERG 

Inspired by true events, Seberg is a noir-ish political thriller examining the F.B.I.'s surveillance of the actress Jean Seberg. Played by Kristen Stewart, Seberg was targeted because of her support of the civil rights movement. It also stars Jack O'Connell, Margaret Qualley, Anthony Mackie and Vince Vaughn. Guaranteed to have you lusting after a pixie cut (resist at your peril) and 60s gamine-chic (do it). 10 January.

DAVID COPPERFIELD

Director Armando Iannucci (of the Thick of It fame) brings a touch of rollicking farce to this Dickensian classic. Praised for its “colour blind” casting, Dev Patel stars in the title role, alongside Peter Capaldi, Hugh Laurie and Tilda Swinton. Finally, a literary adaptation we can get behind. 24 January.

JUST MERCY

After graduating from Harvard, a young lawyer heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned and lacking proper legal representation. One of his first cases is that of Walter McMillian, who is sentenced to die in 1987 for the murder of an 18-year-old white woman, despite evidence proving his innocence. A legal drama starring Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx, Rafe Spall, and Brie Larson. 17 January.

SEX EDUCATION: SERIES 2

The hapless trio, Otis, Maeve and Eric, are back. Thanks to his mother’s work as a high-falutin sex therapist, Series 1 saw Otis Milburn become an unlikely sex councillor for his sixth form classmates. Expect more cringes for the teens of Moordale High, but this time round the show’s female characters are said to be placed in the foreground. 17 January.

THE GOOP LAB

Health professionals avert your gaze—Netflix is lifting the lid on the luxury wellness industry with a new docuseries by Goop. Launched back in 2008, it’s safe to say Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle brand has divided its critics. From jade eggs to exorcisms, is this quackery or legitimate science? Judge for yourself. 24 January.
